Permanent Secretary -Ministry of ICT and National Guidance inspects NBI Phase 3 completed works
Ministry of ICT and National Guidance Permanent Secretary Vincent Bagiire and the NITA-U team inspected the completed works of installations of the National Data Transmission Backbone Infrastructure and eGovernment Infrastructure (NBI/EGI) Phase 3.
NITA-U completed Phase 3 of the NBI covering the Districts of Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale in December 2016.
Phase 3 extends connectivity to the border points with Tanzania and Rwanda at Mutukula and Katuna respectively.
The overall objective of the project is to provide connectivity to Government Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs) and Local Governments through optical fiber cable backbone.
It is intended to enhance data transmission and other e-Government Services across Government thus increasing efficiency and effectiveness of communication as well as service delivery to the citizens.
With the completion of Phase 3 of the NBI there is development of an alternative geographically redundant route to the undersea cables connecting to the global communications infrastructure.
There is also anticipated reduction in the costs of internet bandwidth as a result of increased competiveness through the increase in the number of upstream providers available to IT providers in Uganda.
NITA-U has so far extended connectivity to 200 Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and Local Governments (LGs) 102 MDAs are being connected in FY 16/17, and more will be connected in the coming years.
The Permanent Secretary emphasized the need to improve efficiency in service delivery to citizens now that the proper infrastructure has been completed.
