Parliamentary ICT Committee Tours NBI/EGI Installations

The new Parliamentary ICT Committee has toured installations of the National Data Transmission Backbone Infrastructure and eGovernment Infrastructure (NBI/EGI) in different towns of Uganda to gain appreciation of the NBI/EGI roll out and implementation status.

 

NITA-U is currently implementing Phase 3 of the NBI and will cover the Districts of Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale. Phase 3 will extend connectivity to the border points with Tanzania and Rwanda at Mutukula and Katuna respectively.

 

This is expected to be completed within the FY2016/17 The overall objective of the project is to provide connectivity to Government Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs) and Local Governments through optical fiber cable backbone.

 

This is intended to enhance data transmission and other e-Government Services across Government thus increasing efficiency and effectiveness of communication as well as service delivery to the citizens.

 

Speaking at the meeting the Chairperson ICT Committee Turyahikayo Mary Paul emphasized the need to advance e-Government initiatives to improve Government efficiency in service delivery to citizens.

She added that that the ICT Committee is in place to provide political oversight and guidance to ensure ICT development in the country.

 

NITA-U has so far extended connectivity to 174 Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and Local Governments (LGs) 102 MDAs are being connected in FY 16/17, and more will be connected in the coming years.
